The Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures offers a BA in Languages, Literatures & Cultures with concentrations in Chinese, French & Francophone Studies, German, Italian, Japanese and Russian. We also offer minors in these six languages, as well as Hebrew, and electives in Arabic. The department is composed of 16 faculty members with research and teaching expertise in major world languages and cultures. We prepare and engage students to become informed international citizens, who develop effective multi-lingual and cultural communication expertise and problem-solving skills. Our students apply their linguistic and cultural competencies to a wide variety of majors, careers, and future global challenges, while deepening their empathy for and curiosity about the diversity of human experiences.

DU's undergraduate Russian students acquire written and oral communication skills, as well as a deep knowledge of Russian culture, history, art, literature, and politics. The program works to actively support dual-degree seekers who want to pair their knowledge of Russian with majors like international studies, international business, and intercultural communications. DU houses one of the most extensive university collections of Russian literature, and students further expand their knowledge of Russian through DU's Russian Club and Dobro Slovo, the National Slavic Honor Society.

Position Summary

The College of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences seeks qualified individuals to join our adjunct pool for possible, non-benefited, part-time teaching assignments in Russian at the University of Denver in the 2024-25 academic year.

Adjunct Russian faculty members teach 4-credit undergraduate courses. The opportunity exists to teach both introductory courses as well as higher-level offerings. The specific courses involved may vary from quarter to quarter and openings to teach these courses develop on a periodic basis, depending on departmental needs. At this time, we are searching for Fall 2024, Winter 2025 and Spring 2025 instructors only, however the opportunity may develop to teach courses in the future.

Hires for Fall courses are required to start September 1, 2024. However, we encourage applications from those unable to teach in the Fall but would like to remain in our hiring pool.

Essential Functions

  • Course instruction and grading.
  • Preparation of class materials.
  • Weekly office hours.
  • Guidance and support of students.
  • Participation in Russian program meetings.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Demonstrated excellence and effectiveness in teaching Russian language and literature to Anglophone students in the US at the college or university level.
  • Ability to work through email and to use MS Word and PowerPoint; ability to learn and use DU's Canvas course management system.
  • Experience and demonstrated ability to work effectively with underserved populations.
Required Qualifications
  • MA in Russian language, linguistics, or a related field (e.g. Slavic Studies or Comparative Literature with clear Russian emphasis) by the time of application.
  • Native or near-native level fluency in Russian and English.
  • Experience teaching Russian language at the college or university level with proven excellence and effectiveness.
  • Interest in incorporating inclusive pedagogies to effectively engage broadly diverse student populations.
Preferred Qualifications
  • ABD or PhD in Russian, Slavic Studies, or closely related field, in hand by 1 September 2024.
  • Interdisciplinary breadth, with interest in including social, political, and other cultural contexts in all levels of teaching.
  • 1-3 years of experience teaching Russian culture courses in English
  • 3+ years of experience teaching Russian language at the college or university level with proven excellence and effectiveness.
  • Experience in designing courses, in assessing classes and programs, and in utilizing the campus management system for remote teaching.
  • Extended residence and extensive travel in Russia and/or the Commonwealth of Independent States.
  • Demonstrated experience or evidence of a commitment to incorporate inclusive excellence teaching methods and/or pedagogies to effectively engage broadly diverse student populations.
Work Schedule

Varies - to be coordinated with department chair.

While the University's administrative offices are open Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm, faculty schedules vary from term to term and are based on courses taught, service commitments, and research agendas. Course Rate

The 2023-2024 Adjunct faculty rate is $4,772 per four-credit course and adjuncts may teach up to a maximum of six courses over three academic quarters (Fall, Winter, Spring).

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate's sex or any other protected status.
