About the Department

The Section of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology provides care for patients and families with acute and chronic medical conditions, or other hematologic diseases, requiring the specialty knowledge and skills of Hematology, Oncology and Stem Cell Transplantation.

Job Summary

Administers the day-to-day clinical and research operations for the Pediatric Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation program. Develops, validates, and implements sophisticated algorithms for clinical processes in the transplant program and more broadly in the Section of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology and Stem Cell Transplantation. Coordinates transplant research protocol development and implementation. Writes policy and procedure on stem cell transplantation and other related clinical processes for the Section of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology & Stem Cell Transplantation. Resolves patient problems or refers patients to appropriate resources. Works with Clinical Care Coordinator to ensure that patient visits and procedures are pre-authorized.

Responsibilities

  • Performs infusion of stem cells.
  • Daily rounding.
  • Follow-up on all pertinent laboratory and imaging studies.
  • Maintains effective communication with subspecialists and the inpatient team.
  • Provides ongoing education to patients and families regarding transplants, including discharge teaching.
  • Communicates with the outpatient team and primary care provider upon discharge.
  • Provides care as outlined in the section's policy and procedures while maintaining appropriate documentation for the National Marrow Donor Program and the Federation for Accreditation of Cellular Therapies (FACT).
  • Takes histories, perform physical examinations, formulate a differential diagnosis, and plan for selected patients seen by the Stem Cell Transplant team.
  • Triages patient calls, formulate a plan of care, and document in EPIC.
  • Responsible for writing single patient treatment plan, treatment consent, and applying BEACON plan.
  • Coordinates pre, peri, and post-transplant care for patients undergoing an autologous or allogeneic transplant.
  • Coordinates matched unrelated and cord blood searches through the National Marrow Donor program.
  • Complies with standards and regulations of licensure, regulatory and accrediting agencies.
  • Assumes responsibility for maintaining own competency and continuing education in the area of specialization and in professional practice.
  • Attends relevant workshops, conferences, and seminars locally and nationally.
  • Assists in evaluating the quality of patient care through the application of the quality assurance process.
  • Participates in independent and/or collaborative research projects in stem cell transplant.
  • Develops diagnostic strategies and therapeutic interventions needed to achieve the goals and outcomes of the patient's plan of care.
  • Evaluates goals and outcomes taking into account the benefit-versus-burden, safety, quality, and cost-effectiveness for the patient, family and the organization.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:
Minimum requirements include a college or university degree from an accredited school/college.

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through a combination of education and a minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience in a related job discipline.

Certifications:

Current and/or eligible for State of Illinois licensure/registration required. Eligibility to be privileged and credentialed through the Medical Staff Office (MSO). - State of Illinois

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

  • Master's degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program.

Experience:

  • Demonstrated clinical competency.
  • Knowledge of electronic medical records.
  • Background in research.
  • Research nurse experience or transplant coordinator experience.
  • Experience in pediatric hematology/oncology stem cell transplant.
  • Critical care nursing experience.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support- PALS.
  • Basic Life Support- BLS.
  • National certification as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner or Acute Care Nurse Practitioner.
  • Once licensed and as needed, apply for a mid-level practitioner-controlled substance license and DEA number.

Working Conditions

  • Outpatient clinic.
  • Exposure to human blood, human blood components, and/or products made from human blood.
