Position Summary

Michigan State University Department of Anthropology in the College of Social Science invites applications for a tenure-system position in archaeology at the assistant or associate professor level. The appointment will begin August 16, 2025. We seek an anthropological archaeologist specializing in Cultural Resource Management (CRM) and Heritage Management. While the geographic area of specialization is open, priority will be given to those candidates whose work is in the Midwest or Great Lakes region. Applicant's research should enhance or compliment the archaeological program's primary research theme: Heritage, Preservation, and Community Engagement. Applicants should have an active field-based, lab-based, and/or collections-based program, the ability to organize and lead an archaeological field school focused on Cultural Resource and Heritage Management, the demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in professionally oriented Cultural Resource and Heritage Management, and train undergraduates and graduate students in collections analysis, or lab-based methods, or field-based methods.

Michigan State University is an R1 institution and applicants are expected to have a demonstrated record of high impact peer reviewed publication and sustained competitive external funding for research. University teaching experience, while not required, will greatly strengthen the application.

Required Degree

Doctorate -Anthropology

Minimum Requirements
  • A Ph.D. in Anthropology completed by the date of hire
  • Demonstrated experience in the method, theory, and practice of Cultural Resource and Heritage Management
  • Potential for or demonstrated high impact peer-reviewed publication and competitive external funding for research in topics pertaining to Cultural Resource and Heritage Management
  • Potential for or demonstrated evidence of high-quality instruction and mentoring at the undergraduate and graduate levels
Desired Qualifications
  • Research focus in the Midwest or Great Lakes region
  • Demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate and graduate classes in Cultural Resource and Heritage Management
  • Scholarly interests that enhance or compliment the archaeological program's primary research theme: Heritage, Preservation, and Community Engagement
  • The demonstrated ability to train undergraduates and graduate students in collections analysis, field-based methods, or lab-based methods
  • The ability to organize and lead an archaeological field school with a focus on Cultural Resource and Heritage Management.
  • Active archaeological field, collections, or lab-based research program
  • Demonstrated record of high impact peer-reviewed publication
  • Demonstrated record of success in attaining and sustaining competitive external funding to support research
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with other disciplines and anthropological subfields

Our faculty specializes in sociocultural anthropology, archaeology, medical anthropology, biological anthropology, and linguistic anthropology. However, many of the research themes we address cross these areas of sub-disciplinary specialization, and our research and teaching benefit from consideration of the multiple vantage points we bring to bear on these themes.

The archaeology program in the Department of Anthropology has two signature research areas: Environmental Archaeology; and Heritage, Preservation, & Community Engagement. Our focus across the two signature research areas is both theoretical and applied, and we seek to engage in interdisciplinary collaboration across the archaeological and heritage community.
