TITLE: Assistant Professor of Livestock Nutrition DEPARTMENT: College of Agriculture, Health and Natural ResourcesREPORTS TO: Chair, College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources CLASSIFICATION: Faculty-12 monthsEFFECTIVE DATE: TBDSTANDARD WORK HOURS: 40 hours per weekEMPLOYMENT STATUS: Full-Time EMPLOYMENT CLASSIFICATION: Exempt  JOB SUMMARY: The Assistant Professor of Livestock Nutrition (Tenure Track) position in the College of Agriculture, Health, and Natural Resources at Kentucky State University (KSU). The position will have a combination of research (50%), teaching (25%), and Extension (25%) components.   The Assistant Professor of Livestock Nutrition (Tenure Track) position in the College of Agriculture, Health, and Natural Resources at KSU will lead efforts in supporting beef production and small ruminant program for small-scale and limited-resource farmers in Kentucky, including organic production methods. The successful candidate will conduct research in areas that include nutrition requirements for small-scale beef cattle production, nutritional modulation of the rumen microbiota, beef cattle feeding strategies that optimize feed efficiency and minimize methane emissions, feed quality and/or safety, and consumer education. This position will provide agent trainings for Extension personnel as well as off campus workshops targeted towards stakeholders in beef production for small-scale, limited-resource, and socially disadvantaged farmers in Kentucky. The successful candidate will teach several animal science courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels.  ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Develop an active beef cattle and small ruminant research program related to beef cattle, sheep, and goat nutrition, feed efficiency or productivity, nutritional modulation of the gut microbiome, and sustainability of farmsPublish research results in refereed journals, books, factsheets, and book chapters, abstracts and proceedings, and other publications and media outlets related to animal science.Develop research and Extension proposals for submission to public and private agencies to enhance Extension and research programing.Provide statewide leadership in Extension programing in beef cattle production for small-scale farms by designing, implementing, and evaluating educational programs.Create Extension curriculums for agricultural Extension agents.Share research-based results with stakeholders through Extension programs.Mentor graduate and undergraduate students engaged in applied ruminant nutrition research projects.Serve on committees for university, stakeholder groups, and professional associations.Work with small-scale, limited resource, and socially disadvantaged farmers and underserved communities.Be strongly committed to teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level and should incorporate innovative, inquiry-based, dynamic, and active-learning methods into courses.Collaborate with colleagues at 1890 institutions, other land grant and non-land grant institutions, USDA and state agencies, and other professionals to enhance the quality of research.Participate actively in the appropriate professional societies via oral and poster presentations, serving on committees and holding office, and other society involvement.Other related duties as required.  KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED: Candidates should have knowledge in the areas of ruminant nutrition.Candidates must demonstrate the potential for collaborative, integrated, multi-disciplinary research, granting, publishing, and stakeholder involvement.Potential to generate external fundingPreference will be given to candidates with a record of excellence in research and teaching and the ability to mentor undergraduate and graduate students.Experience working with diverse students especially minorities and first-generation college studentsStrong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in the university setting.Ability to monitor or supervise laboratory research.Ability to work under deadlines.Valid driver’s license.       SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: This position does have supervisory responsibility.   OTHER DUTIES: The position will conduct other duties as required. QUALIFICATIONS: Required: Ph.D. degree required in the field of animal science, ruminant microbiology, ruminant nutrition, nutritional sciences, or related areas. WORKING CONDITIONS: 

  • Must be able to travel (20%)
  • Able to conduct field work, including the collection of samples, from a range of environments
  • Occasionally may need to move light equipment and carry supplies, publications, and needed equipment for demonstration and training programs.
