Assistant Professor of Biology - 000936
University of Richmond

Richmond, Virginia

The University of Richmond Department of Biology invites applications for a full-time tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin in the 2025-26 academic year.

We seek a colleague who will excel in inclusive, undergraduate teaching and engage undergraduates in a research program that produces peer-reviewed scholarship. We are especially interested in recruiting individuals who have interest or experience in broadening access and inclusivity in STEM disciplines, which aligns with the University's strategic plan (https://strategicplan.richmond.edu). A doctoral degree and post-doctoral experience are required.

The successful candidate is expected to teach courses in the physiology of multicellular organisms. Teaching expectations include Integrated Biological Principles II - a core introductory course on organismal physiology and ecology within the context of evolution - and upper-level courses on topics in integrative physiology. The research program should intersect with teaching interests.

The University of Richmond is a private university located just a short drive from downtown Richmond, Virginia. Through its five schools and wide array of campus programming, the University combines the best qualities of a small liberal arts college and a large university. With approximately 4,000 students, an 8:1 student-faculty ratio, and more than 90% of traditional undergraduate students living on campus, the University is remarkably student-centered, focused on preparing students "to live lives of purpose, thoughtful inquiry, and responsible leadership in a global and pluralistic society."

The University of Richmond is committed to developing a diverse workforce and student body, and to modeling an inclusive campus community which values the expression of difference in ways that promote excellence in teaching, learning, personal development, and institutional success. Our academic community strongly encourages applications that are in keeping with this commitment. For more information on the department and its programs, please see https://biology.richmond.edu.

Applicants should apply online at https://jobs.richmond.edu. Complete applications should include a curriculum vitae, a cover letter, and two statements (each no more than 3 pages) focused on the candidate's qualifications and experience for this position:

  • A teaching statement describing the candidate's teaching experience and approaches, how their plans for teaching and research intersect, and ideas for new and existing courses they could envision teaching at the University of Richmond. The teaching statement should also address the candidate's interest and/or experience with inclusive pedagogy.
  • A research statement describing plans for the candidate's research program, how it will contribute to their field, and how their research program will incorporate undergraduate researchers. The research statement should also address the candidate's interest and/or experience with mentoring students from diverse backgrounds.

  • Candidates for this position may be asked, at a later date, to provide the names and contact information for three references. Review of applications will commence on August 16, 2024 and continue until the position is filled. Questions about the search should be addressed to Dr. Linda Boland at lboland@richmond.edu.
