The Department of Music at Colgate University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Music in Jazz Studies, beginning in fall semester 2025. The successful candidate for this position will also serve as the Director of the Concert Jazz Ensemble. A DMA or equivalent degree in jazz studies or a closely related field is required prior to or shortly after the date of hire.

We seek a candidate who possesses a strong commitment to and enthusiasm for teaching both major and non-major students within a liberal arts context. The ideal candidate should have intellectual curiosity to forge new connections across Colgate's dynamic academic and cultural community. They should also bring scholarly and teaching interests that complement those of the current faculty. The candidate will be joining the Music Department as it implements a new undergraduate curriculum, which embraces stylistic diversity, contextual depth, and the opportunity for more individualized paths, while maintaining a robust foundation in analysis, historical-cultural study, creation, and practice. Additionally, the successful candidate will direct the Colgate Concert Jazz Ensemble and teach courses including History of Jazz; Jazz Theory and Improvisation; new offerings based on the candidate's areas of expertise and interest, such as The History of Hip Hop, Music of Latin America, History of American Music, or another proposed course; and potentially the capstone and introductory music courses in rotation. The successful candidate will also fulfill the expectation that all Colgate faculty participate in all-university programs, including the Liberal Arts Core Curriculum (https://www.colgate.edu/academics/core-curriculum).

We are especially interested in candidates whose research and teaching areas show promise for building new interdisciplinary connections across Colgate's campus, including fields such as Africana and Latin American Studies, Asian Studies, Dance, LGBTQ Studies, Women's and Gender and Sexuality Studies, and languages.

Salary Range or Pay Grade

$92,300 (for ABD candidates) to $96,300 (for candidate with the DMA or equivalent degree in hand)
