Job Summary:

The Department of Public Affairs and Planning (PAPL) in the College of Architecture, Planning and Public Affairs (CAPPA) at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor of Urban Planning to begin Fall 2025.

We seek a colleague who represents UTA's populations with a teaching and research focus in one or more of the following areas: environmental planning, land use planning, historic preservation, and/or community development. Potential or experience in mentoring doctoral students is essential. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The candidate should contribute to the core curriculum and teach courses in one or more of the following: environmental planning and policy; plan implementation, zoning and regulations; land use planning and the law; urban revitalization and community development. Teaching is predominantly at the masters and doctoral level but may include undergraduate classes. The candidate should show a strong potential for a successful independent academic career by demonstrating the ability to develop and lead a research agenda, actively seek external funding sources, and effectively guide and mentor graduate students. The candidate is expected to contribute to our emphasis areas and certificate programs, supervise theses and dissertations in the planning programs, and serve on departmental, college, and university committees. Applied research supporting local communities, and other impactful community engagement activities, are valued.

Required Qualifications:

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in planning or a closely related field by August 31, 2025. The search committee will consider all-but-dissertation (ABD) students who will have completed their degree requirements by their time of hire. The successful candidate must demonstrate potential to establish a strong research and publishing agenda and excel in teaching. Candidates should have a strong commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration at departmental, college and university levels.

Preferred Qualifications:

Research and teaching interests related to interdisciplinary work would be a strong asset. We are also open to candidates with either domestic or international planning research agendas.
We welcome AICP certification and experience in professional planning and community outreach and service especially with underserved communities. Experience and interest in working with faculty on multidisciplinary research and teaching is valued, especially in other college areas such public administration, public policy, urban design, and architecture.

Department Information:

The accredited Master of City and Regional Planning (MCRP) and the Ph.D. in Urban Planning and Public Policy (UPPP) are two of the four graduate degrees, including the Ph.D. in Public Administration and Public Policy and the Master of Public Administration, offered by the Department of Public Affairs and Planning (PAPL) in the College of Architecture, Planning, and Public Affairs (CAPPA). PAPL's fourteen full-time faculty members are committed to a unique interdisciplinary application of planning and public affairs coverage across its degrees, with many shared classes and emphasis areas.

With a broadly trained multidisciplinary faculty, CAPPA also offers a Master of Landscape Architecture, Master of Architecture, and Master of Science in Sustainable Building Technology and bachelor's degrees in architecture, interior design, and sustainable urban design. The college's six research centers, including the state-funded Institute of Urban Studies, the David Dillon Center for Texas Architecture, Arlington Urban Design Center, the Digital Architecture Research Consortium, and the Center for Metropolitan Density, conduct research and professional projects throughout the metropolitan region, the state, and beyond. Additionally, the planning faculty lead the Center for Transportation, Equity, Decisions and Dollars (CTEDD).
