Unit Mission Statement:

The Department of Theatre & Performance is committed to preserving, transmitting, and expanding our understanding of Theatre and Dance within the larger context of a liberal arts education. A hallmark of the department's mission is the active integration of scholarly and artistic work in both courses and productions. The disciplinary relationship between Theatre and Dance offers a unique environment in which to explore and study performance and production from a multi-disciplinary and collaborative perspective. Students are offered a course of study designed to develop creative potential, foster inventive thought, and contribute to an appreciation of humankind's artistic, intellectual, and cultural heritage.

The Department is committed, through its productions, to providing cultural resources for university and community audiences, including classical and contemporary works that challenge and integrate commercial theatre and dance. The disciplines of Theatre and Dance, because of their ever-evolving nature, are particularly well‑equipped to prepare students to be highly responsive in rapidly changing environments both within and outside of these disciplines.

Position Summary:

The Department of Theatre & Performance at William & Mary, a public university of the Commonwealth of Virginia, invites applications for a 3-year, non-tenure track Assistant Teaching Professor of Theatre & Performance instructional position that will begin August 10, 2025. This full-time teaching faculty appointment carries a service component commensurate with rank and comes with the possibility of ongoing renewals and a framework for promotion.

We seek an individual with expertise in technical theatre, stage design, and set construction and intro to theatre courses at the university level. Applicants with expertise in digital and multimedia design are encouraged, but not required. The successful applicant will be expected to be an effective teacher and will have a [3-3] teaching load.

The Theatre & Performance, Technical Production teaching faculty member is responsible for providing courses which may include course in Technical Theatre, Design, and Production at all levels, including stagecraft, design, stage management, intro to theatre, as well as other courses that support the major and in their areas of expertise. Core responsibilities include teaching stagecraft, intro to theatre, and other areas of individual expertise. Assistance on main season productions will be incorporated into the faculty member's teaching allocation. Experience in digital design and multimedia is encouraged, but not required.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate excellence in theatre design and production in professional, community, and/or academic theatre. For consideration, candidates must also demonstrate proficiency as a teaching artist with interdisciplinary interests and their ability to support the liberal arts mission of the college. They are also the academic advisor for undergraduate students. Duties may also include scenic design for the department's main season productions. Candidates with professional and/or academic directing experience are encouraged to indicate that in their submission materials.

Required Qualifications:

  • An MFA in Technical Direction, Theatre Production, Design, or related field from an accredited institution is required at the time appointment begins (August 10, 2025).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of stage production practices and processes such as: carpentry (basic and advanced stagecraft) methods and techniques, design, lighting instruments and sound equipment, theatrical rigging, rehearsal processes, collaborative processes.
  • Applicants should have at least one year of university teaching experience and/or professional credits in technical direction, design, theatre production roles, or other fields of technical theatre.
  • Demonstration of effective teaching and mentorship in technical theatre in higher education settings.
  • Knowledgeable of OSHA and industry safety compliance rules and possess extensive knowledge of safe use of equipment.
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two or more years of teaching experience in theatre in higher education settings.
  • Skilled in the use of digital design, multimedia design, video and/or visual media systems and software.
  • Experience teaching intro to theatre and other areas of theatre studies curriculum.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in areas such as stagecraft, lighting and/or stage design, stage management, theory and practical skills in theater.
  • Demonstrated commitment to inclusive teaching.
