This position serves as the Business Manager for the Pre-Award Unit in the Financial Shared Service Program within the School of Medicine. The Business Manager will provide strategic direction and consultation on complex pre-award management issues for assigned departments. This role is integral to the submission and administration of contracts and grants, working closely with principal investigators (PIs) to ensure compliance with university and sponsor guidelines. The Business Manager will focus on proposal development, funding opportunities, and sponsor communication, ensuring that the pre-award process runs smoothly and efficiently. This position requires a strong understanding of regulatory guidelines and funding agency requirements, as well as the ability to analyze and resolve issues related to pre-award compliance. The Business Manager will oversee a team of Pre-Award Specialists and ensure that all proposals are submitted accurately and on time. Responsibilities include managing proposal submissions, developing financial budgets for research projects, and reviewing proposals for accuracy and compliance. In addition to managing the day-to-day operations of the pre-award team, the Business Manager will lead process improvement initiatives within the unit. This includes evaluating existing workflows, identifying areas for optimization, and ensuring consistency across the unit's operations. Strong problem-solving, analytical thinking, decision-making, and consulting skills are required to support the complex financial and research needs of the School of Medicine. The Business Manager will also ensure that all funds are utilized appropriately and work with stakeholders to resolve issues related to grant submissions and compliance. This role requires the ability to work with a wide range of funding sources, including federal and state grants, contracts, and institutional trust funds, while guiding and supporting the Pre-Award Specialists in the management of complex funding proposals.
First time manager with Masters and 5+ years of relevant experience; or Bachelors with at least 1-2 yrs supervisory experience and 5+ years of relevant experience
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:Ability to monitor and manage financial accounts for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with accounting standards, regulations, and laws. Ability to manage reporting of complex financial areas or programs, including preparation of financial statements and reports. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel. Excellent organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:Experience with grants and contracts. Thorough knowledge of government accounting methods, procedures, and accounting practices. Experience in a university and/or medical setting is preferred. Certified Research Administrator (CRA) certification preferred. Knowledge of NIH, NSF, DOD, and other awarding agency regulations and requirements.
