Reporting to the firm’s Lead Key Client Insights Analyst, the CI Analyst will provide client, prospect, industry, and other business research support to end users at a leading global law firm. The successful applicant must be a strong researcher capable of offering strategic insight by interpreting research results and identifying patterns, trends, and anomalies to stay ahead of the competition. Professional services industry experience is preferred, but intellectual curiosity, the willingness to look deeper for answers to challenging questions, analytical proficiency, and solid business acumen are musts. This is a firmwide, full-time, exempt position – and may be located in any TX market where Baker Botts operates, though the role will be remote.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to, assisting with strategic projects and ad hoc intelligence requests as needed, providing actionable information to drive business growth; tracking and analyzing competitor intelligence; conducting extensive research into industry and market trends; and proactive monitoring of legal and business news to spot opportunities.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

Primary Responsibilities

  • Work within a team to spearhead in-depth research on clients, prospects, competitors, geographic markets, and industry sectors to support business development and strategic growth.
  • Work hand-in-hand with business development professionals, pricing and project management team members, librarians, technologists, and others to integrate internal and external data into a holistic perspective of the firm’s position and opportunities.
  • Synthesize vast amounts of information from disparate sources into clear, concise findings and provide presentations for lawyers and firm leadership – to include reporting using generative AI tools, Excel, and Power BI.
  • Respond to ad-hoc business research requests with deadlines ranging from a few hours to a month or more.
  • ‘Think outside the box’ to translate data into intelligence and drive efficiencies throughout the firm.
  • Evaluate new research tools and technologies for effectiveness and value.
Other Duties & Responsibilities
  • Stay abreast of current events and apply this knowledge to firm research and identification of firm opportunities.
  • Proactively seek new ways to improve the effectiveness of competitive intelligence resources, deliverables, and methodologies.
  • Maintain research protocols and systems that identify opportunities, monitor competitors, and anticipate trends that may impact clients or the firm.
  • Stay abreast of changes in the legal industry and how these impact client relations and the firm, overall.
  • Other tasks and special projects, as assigned.
Qualifications

Required
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Marketing, or Market Research.
  • Two to three years of business development, market research, and/or competitive intelligence experience.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs, with intermediate/advanced knowledge of Excel (e.g., VLOOKUP, SUMIFS, pivot tables/charts).
  • Demonstrated analytical and research skills, with an ability to mine, analyze, and draw insights from large and complex data. Experience working in robust databases and models and ability to present information visually and verbally in a concise, effective manner.
  • Demonstrable experience with generative AI (e.g., ChatGPT, Harvey) for business research.
  • Adept at using a holistic approach to critical thinking and problem-solving, connecting the dots at both macro and micro levels.
  • Reliable interpersonal skills with the ability to build collaborative working relationships across disciplines and with various personalities, comfortable interacting with firm leadership.
  • Highly inquisitive and resourceful nature combined with perseverance, patience, and a driving desire to deliver high-value results while maintaining excellent service orientation.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Enjoys working collaboratively but also comfortable working independently.
  • Able to thrive in a fast-paced environment, with strong skills in written/verbal communication, organizational ability, project management, and dealing with ambiguity.
  • Proven ability to prioritize workloads and handle a number of concurrent projects/tasks and deliver against tight deadlines.
Preferred
  • Experience with legal and financial processes/concepts.
  • Experience with legal and business resources such as Capital IQ, PitchBook, Intelligize, Monitor Suite, MergerMarket, Westlaw, Lexis, Foundation, and Aderant.
Extent of Public Contact (within and outside the firm)

This position requires contact with individuals within the Firm as follows:
  • A high degree of contact within the Client Development and Library Research departments.
  • A moderate degree of interaction with firm lawyers and other firm staff.
This position requires contact with individuals outside the Firm as follows:
  • A moderate degree of contact with vendors/suppliers.
Physical Demands
  • Must be able to work at a computer and telephone for extensive periods of time.
  • Must be able to routinely lift and carry files and other items up to 10 pounds; and
  • Must be able to function in a standard office environment.
Working Conditions
  • Work is normally performed in a typical office work environment.
  • Position is full-time and requires a five-day workweek and standard hours as outlined in the firm policy manual. Work frequently requires more than the regularly scheduled hours per week to perform the essential duties of the position especially during summer and fall recruiting.
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as necessary.
  • Additional hours, beyond the standard work week, will be required on occasion to complete the essential functions of the job, and some limited travel may be required.
