General Schedule
Position typically works 40 hours per week Monday - Friday from 8am-5pm at UCO's main campus in Edmond, Oklahoma. Some evening and weekend work required.

Position Overview
Provide academic advising, develop, implement, and manage activities, programs, and services to promote student recruitment, growth, success, retention, and/or extracurricular development. May represent UCO to the wider Edmond and OKC community, outside committees and organizations, prospective students, high schools, and parents. Provides academic advising, guidance and counseling to students in matters related to academic goals, choice of curriculum, course load, study habits, and course scheduling. Completes manual degree checks for individual students and student groups as needed. Assists with student orientation.

The primary duty (more than 50% and most significant) of this position is academic advisement; therefore, it qualifies as FLSA exempt.

Department Specific Essential Job Functions

Advisement- 55%

  • Informs students on appropriate academic schedules, choice of major, number of hours available, probation, and suspension; suggests remedial or corrective actions.
  • Completes degree audits for individual students and student groups as needed.
  • Works closely with and takes training from Director of Advising.
  • Articulates coursework as needed.
  • Program Development and Implementation- 25%

  • Coordinate, oversee, and support fundraising for Retention Programming community and student programs working with conference committee members, sponsors, and community leaders.
  • Lead planning and implementation of student-retention focused conferences.
  • Implement student recruitment and selection strategies for student retention initiatives.
  • Coordinate co-curricular programming for initiative students that addresses program goals of the UCO student retention initiatives.
  • Retention Initiative Advisement and Supervision- 15%

  • Supervise and facilitate a comprehensive mentoring program for new and continuing students featuring one-on-one coaching/mentoring that provides student support and connects students to various campus resources to improve persistence and retention of students.
  • Create and facilitate curriculum for mentor training and orientation.
  • Community Collaboration- 5%

  • Build partnerships with internal entities including, but not limited to recruitment, student advocacy, student support services, and academic support services to discuss retention and best practices for student success.
  • Build partnerships with external entities including but not limited to donors and community leaders.
  • Other duties as necessary and assigned

    Qualifications/Experience Required

    • Requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience that provides extensive knowledge of fundamental theories, principles, and concepts.
    • Requires the application of expertise in a chosen field to achieve results.
    • 3 - 5 years of experience with leading planning, including program development and innovation, program prioritization, and assessment.
    • Extensive knowledge and comprehensive understanding of functional area.
    • Appropriate professional accomplishments and credentials.

    Qualifications/Experience Preferred

    • Master's degree in higher education, with an emphasis on student personnel/student affairs, or related subject.
    • 5+years of experience advising students.
    • Demonstrated experience in leading, developing, implementing, and evaluating student programs.
    • Demonstrated research and analytical skills.
    • Experience supervising.
    • Experience working effectively with cross-functional teams, task forces, or committees.
    • Understanding of contemporary issues in higher education.

    Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

    • Superior leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
    • High level of cultural competence.
    • Ability to collaborate by establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with faculty, administrators, staff, and students in different areas and at different levels of the University.
    • Ability to manage organizational change.
    • Excellent human relations skills and demonstrated ability to work effectively with all student communities.
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality and to handle sensitive matters with judgment, tact, and diplomacy.
    • Demonstrated research and analytical skills with data and metrics.
    • Understanding of administrative processes and practices in higher education.
    • Understanding of contemporary issues in higher education.
