40 Hours | Flexible schedule to meet department needs to include possible evenings and weekends. Peak weeks of semesters will require additional hours. Will be required to work other locations or hours outside of normal store operation to support campus events.
Position Summary
This vital brand ambassador for McHenry County College provides overall management for the MCC Store. Use your merchandising and marketing savvy to take our College retail and bookstore to the next level, focusing on new strategies that attract and retain student, employee, and community customers. Create a team culture of creativity and service excellence to ensure the best customer experience, and provide a relevant inventory that is relevant and responsive in the shifting college bookstore landscape. The Director is responsible for the administration, general management, and supervision of the MCC Store and to operate a competitive and sustainable business model with an entrepreneurial spirit that contributes to the overall success of the college in meeting its mission, vision, values, and goals in its service to the students and the greater campus community. Services offered include textbook, trade books, college and art supplies, gifts and sundries, computers, software, specialty items, and campus branded apparel.
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities
Ensure compliance with policies and mission by reviewing and approving the MCC Store's plans, goals, objectives, and service activities and evaluating/reporting on progress towards their accomplishmentDevelop effective department procedures in compliance with best practices and college policies which encourage growth in the MCC Store by developing new and improving present procedures Prepare financial analysis of relevant retail activities to benchmark performance, such as inventory turnover, profit margins, day's sales outstanding, break even points, revenue per transaction, etc.Coordinate and supervise the daily operation of the MCC Store computer system that provides the following functions: financial management, inventory management (textbooks, general books, general merchandise), purchase order management, sales processing and point-of-sale transactions, and financial aid interaction Maintain accountability of funds receivedDevelop and monitor the bookstore operating budget and ensure a profitable operation for the College by making decisions using the profit and loss statement as a guidelineCreate and/or maintain a business plan (model) that includes forecasts, operating performance metrics, and merchandising and sundries requirements Coordinate and plan marketing efforts, including, but not limited to, promotional, visual displays, etc.Compile and track sales data; evaluate data for future stocking and promotional eventsMaintain control of purchases for the MCC Store by authorizing requests and recommending acceptance of new contractsReceiving, verifying, adding to inventory records, stocking and affixing price stickers with appropriate prices that have been established in accordance with College policyDetermine prices on books, rentals, and buy-backs in accordance with College policy and vendor agreementsEnsure an adequate supply of books for all classes Ensure the MCC Store is open with extended and/or flexible hours as needed to accommodate peak times of the semester or to meet the service needs of the CollegeOversee and/or initiate all MCC Store inventory activities, which includes ordering, merchandising, receiving, inventory management, and reportingReviews inventory level to liquidate, destroy, and/or donate obsolete merchandise with approval of supervisorEnsure timely processing and application of credits to invoices, receipts of commission checks, and outstanding receivables Supervises, trains, and assists the MCC Store employees and student employeesMaintain a current knowledge of the policies and procedures of publishers, distributors and other sources of supplyMaintain knowledge of industry standards and innovations regarding books, merchandise, public relations, store operations and information systems Work collaboratively with others (e.g. colleagues, stakeholders, vendors) to accomplish functions and responsibilitiesAssume additional duties as assigned by immediate supervisorRequired Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree from a regionally accredited institution, preferably in Business Administration, Retail Management, or related field or equivalent experienceFive years of general management experience in a college store environment or equivalent amount of training in a similar area of retailingGeneral knowledge of and experience with accepted business and retailing practicesThe ability to analyze profit and loss statementsThe ability to develop marketing and business plansExperience with online sales and online marketingDemonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic, and disability backgrounds of the MCC Store and college patronsExperience running point-of-sale systemSUPERVISORY RELATIONSHIPS / DIRECT REPORTS:Full-time and part-time staff within the MCC StoreStudent Employees
