The University of Miami, in Miami, Florida is seeking a Genetic Counselor 3 for the Department of Human Genetics. Duties and responsibilities include providing clinical care, contributing towards research, and/or supports clinical laboratory services by using advanced genetic counseling skills and competencies. Position will conduct clinical practice skills in the areas of cancer and other genetic diseases, and will work independently in clinical care, education, research, or other related areas, and serve as a role model for other genetic counselors and healthcare professionals. Key responsibilities include contributing to ongoing output through grant writing, publication, and/or presentation on a region and/or national level. The position's clinical duties include performing case preparation and follow-up independently, obtaining medical records, performing a literature review, and making referrals. Role's lab duties include demonstrating an understanding related to genetic tests and the associated disorders provided by the laboratory; developing expertise in assigned testing area, developing and reporting results, including generating and reviewing reports, calling out/explaining abnormal, preliminary, or stat results, and suggestions for appropriate follow-up consultations or testing.

Partial remote work/telecommuting is permitted.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Establishes a mutually agreed upon genetic counseling agenda with the patient and their family.
  • Elicits appropriate family history and medical information, including pregnancy, developmental, and medical histories.
  • Conveys genetic, medical, and technical information, such as diagnosis, etiology, and natural history.
  • Explains technical and medical aspects of diagnostic and screening methods, and reproductive options.
  • Assesses and calculates genetic and teratogenic risks. Identifies, synthesizes, organizes, and summarizes pertinent medical and genetic information to identify and access appropriate local, regional, and national resources and services for families with genetic disorders.
  • Facilitates the identification of a course of action for patients and families which is appropriate in view of their risks, family goals, and ethical and religious standards.
  • Facilitates the patient's adjustment to life with a disorder and helps affected family members to cope.
  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.
Laboratory Role:

  • Demonstrates understanding related to genetic tests and the associated disorders provided by the laboratory; develops expertise in assigned testing area.
  • Develops and reports results, including generating and reviewing reports, calling out/explaining abnormal, preliminary, or stat results, and suggestions for appropriate follow-up consultations or testing.
  • Acts as a liaison for clients of the laboratories, providing information and technical support on appropriate test use, limits/accuracy, interpretation of results, reporting and/or follow-up of abnormal results.
  • Develops and maintains clinical databases as needed.
  • Develops and presents/publishes educational materials related to laboratory testing, design and maintain Laboratory and product-specific websites.
  • Spanish fluency (spoken and written) required

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Master's degree from an Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling (ACGC) accredited training program or equivalent

Certification and Licensing:

Certified by the American Board of Genetic counseling (ABGC) or the American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG)

Experience:

Minimum 3 years of relevant experience, preferably 5 years of relevant experience in Cancer Genetics
