Job Overview

The Hazardous Materials Specialist performs a variety of tasks related to laboratory safety, environmental compliance and hazardous material/waste management. This includes collecting hazardous material/waste, universal waste and processing waste. The incumbent must understand proper chemical handling and storage techniques. This position will be conducting lab packing of hazardous and non-hazardous waste according to Federal and Local Regulations. This position will assist laboratory workers in chemical clean-out, chemical inventories and inspecting Main Accumulation Areas (MAAs) and Satellite Accumulation Areas (SAAs) for hazardous waste. This position will also assist in Industrial hygiene duties such as Indoor Air Quality Assessments, Suspect Microbial Growth Assessments, other Industrial Hygiene surveys and instrument inventory and maintenance.

This position is an after-hours emergency responder for hazardous materials incidents.

Work Interactions and Work Mode Designation

This position works under the direction of the Senior Industrial Hygiene and Compliance Manager. Works closely with the EH&S laboratory safety staff and Facilities Management. This position will regularly interact with faculty and staff to provide customer services and guidance for hazardous materials related requirements.

Requirements and Qualifications

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry, industrial hygiene, environmental science or other closely related field.
  • 2-3 years of relevant professional experience
  • Experience in consolidating waste, lab packing and solid understanding of RCRA, DOT, EPA, and OSHA regulations.
  • Must be willing to wear proper PPE (including air-purifying respirators).
  • Ability to use environmental monitoring equipment and office computers and software (including database software, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (oral and writing)
  • Strong organizational and time management skills


Preferred
  • 3 or more years' experience
  • 40 hr HAZWOPER
  • Experience preparing shipping documents and coordinating transportation of chemicals products and hazardous waste.
  • Knowledge and experience in basic industrial hygiene principles.
