ROLE TITLE: Laboratory Technician in ESS and Geology

POSITION REPORTS TO: ESS Department Chair

Summary of Position

Provides support with the set up and maintenance of labs and lab equipment for the ESS Department and ESS courses, including maintenance of lab supplies and instrumentation. Provides additional support for ESS, Creek Connections and the Watershed Conservation Research Center in equipment/instrumentation ordering and maintenance. Teaches 1-2 courses per academic year in support of the ESS major and Environmental Geology minor program.

As Laboratory Technician in ESS and Geology, you will:

  • Maintain instruments and equipment for ESS and Environmental Geology teaching and research including scanning electron microscope, atomic absorption spectrometer, muffle furnace, AR sandbox and stream table (including coordination and outreach for use of instruments by outside groups)
  • Teaches 1-2 courses per academic year in support of offerings in Environmental Science & Sustainability and Geology
  • Maintain supplies and inventory for teaching and research (lab materials, chemicals, field equipment)
  • Prep and set up labs for ESS and Environmental Geology courses including logistics for field trips and field-based labs, as needed
  • Maintain extensive geological collections (currently housed in Alden Hall) as well as Carr Hall living wall and fish pond
  • Coordinate OSHA and other professional trainings for students; advise student Geo Club; train students (e.g. comping seniors) in the use of above referenced instrumentation; supervise work study students and lab assistants

Experience and Qualifications

  • Master's degree required, Doctoral degree preferred, and 3-5 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Understanding of geology and environmental geology at a level needed to both teach and design/support field based research programs in these areas
  • Successful performance in program development, and project coordination
  • Ability to operate, maintain and instruct others in the use of instrumentation and equipment including the SEM, the AAS, AR sandbox, stream table, geoprobe, subsurface soil and water sampling rig, and muffle furnace
  • Ability to troubleshoot and creatively support faculty and students in research project design and implementation
  • Ability to manage confidential and sensitive information
  • Exceptional organizational and interpersonal skills Track Record of achieving extraordinary results
  • Proven ability to influence and build strong relationships

YOUR COMPENSATION

New hires are typically brought into the organization at a salary between the range minimum and the salary range midpoint depending on qualifications, internal equity, and the budgeted amount for the role.

Based on FLSA testing, this position is exempt. The expected minimum salary range starting point for this position is $59,000 annually.
