Job Summary
Make, assemble, and repair wood, and wood composite products and materials.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Operating machines and woodworking tools, including a variety of saws, drill presses, milling machines, and other wood-shaping machines.
  • Assemble the machined parts, adding fasteners and adhesives, and installing hardware.
  • Complete products by sanding them in preparation for staining and finishing with protective coatings.
  • Read shop drawings, schematics and blueprints
  • Assist and train apprentices.
  • Set up and maintain machines and tools for woodwork manufacturing.
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned.
Additional Physical Demands
1. May work in confined spaces and at heights.
2. May be exposed to chemicals, heat, cold, dust, fumes, noise, and inclement weather, and the hazards of moving machinery and sharp tools.
3. Receives daily oral instructions from Foreperson as well as Superintendent of Building Maintenance. Work is reviewed by Foreperson after each project is completed and occasionally during progress of project.
4. Can require the ability to multitask on given assignments.
5. Certain assignments can be stressful at times.
6. The employee is expected to support the Mission, Vision, Values, Guiding Principles and management operational directions and philosophies of Facilities and Services.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Four (4) years (48 months) of work experience in a woodworking mill or cabinet shop using hand and power woodworking machinery and tools and in the layout, milling, and assembly of products made from wood and related materials.
  • Possession of valid Illinois driver's license at time of hire and maintained throughout employment.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Journeyman level skills in mill work.
  • Ability to understand oral and written instructions; often accompanied by blueprints with dimensions.
  • Skill in operating and maintaining machinery.
  • Basic math skills.
  • Ability to communicate knowledge of trade to assist and train apprentices.
  • Working knowledge and practice of safety procedures.
Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 2678 - Mill Worker position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the search close date. Salary for this position is based on the prevailing rate and is currently $40.10 per hour. Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position.
