What You Can Expect

Under minimal supervision and within prescribed timeframe (Product delivery for surgery date, etc.) is delivered a blue print, hand drawn sketches, or verbal instructions and must determine how to craft a unique product for Engineering, Marketing, or patient implant purposes through modeling (CAM or equivalent), material selection (both metallic and nonmetallic), order of operations determination, fixture development, set-up, tooling and operation of conventional, special purpose, or multi axis CNC machines.

How You'll Create Impact

  • Effectively communicates directly with Development Engineers through an iterative process to achieve best design intent results in product build.
  • Use blueprints to determine process, material, equipment and tool selection.
  • Use blueprint as dimensional reference for tolerances and to identify non-conforming issues with assemblies and processes.
  • Identify correct material and process that material using prescribed methods of traceability. Have material ordered that is unavailable.
  • Evaluate blueprints, material, and specifications to produce finished product, using available equipment, computers, fixtures and tooling. Sends out for vend those operations that cannot be completed in house.
  • Identify tooling needed and models, designs, and fabricates fixtures to hold parts during machining operations or to hold parts in location for welding or assembly.
  • Uses CAD / CAM software and drafting techniques to obtain tool paths for programming and transfers data to CNC equipment.
  • Use software to identify, modify, inspect, model, draft, and dimension parts. Uses advanced software applications for use in assembly interference, programming 3 +2 and 5 axis machining and tool collisions.
  • Sets-up, operates, and maintains assigned jobs on all of the following types of machines: lathe, mill, EDM, grinder, either CNC or conventional type. Performs offsets and replaces tools as required to maintain mechanical drawing specifications.
  • May operate multiple pieces of equipment concurrently.
  • Inspects parts to mechanical drawing ensuring tolerances are maintained using appropriate inspection tool.
  • Ensures accuracy and validity of paperwork, documentation and inspection tools prior to starting a job.
  • Completes all required regulatory documentation.
  • Assists other Team Members within work area in areas of specialty skill and serves as subject matter expert.
  • Adheres to and is in compliance with all safety procedures and practices. Immediately reports any safety concerns or violations to management.
  • Engages in cross training activities and position rotations to develop and maintain proficiencies within assigned work area, or across work areas.
  • Assist, trains and leads other team members in work area as required. Responsible for training new members in the work area.
  • Owns necessary tools to perform assigned machining operations.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with highly technical professionals (Engineers) and develop best solutions to meet design intent for finished product.
  • Ability to independently problem solve and produce results under tight project timeframes (i.e. delivery of product for Physician demo, or surgery date).
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to proficiently read and interpret blueprints and all measuring devices used within the unit, such as scales, micrometers, calipers, etc.
  • Ability to interpret geometric tolerances.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to understand and apply basic Trigonometry.
  • Ability to exercise decision-making authority, later verified by the Department Supervisor or development engineer.
  • Ability to advise the Engineer, Department Supervisor, or designee, of transactions and/or special concerns on a daily basis.
  • Ability to independently solve practical problems and deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables in situations where only very limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, use hands to finger, handle or feel and reach with hands and arms.
  • The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.


Your Background

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); Trade school preferred or equivalent training or experience with 8+ years' experience in the relevant areas.
  • Proficient in the use of all appropriate equipment and precision measuring instruments.
