The University of Iowa Health Care is seeking a Nurse Manager to perform specific tasks to assist members of the Nursing team in providing patient care under the direct supervision of the Department Administrator and Department of Nursing Director.

Position Specific Summary:

The UI James A. Clifton Digestive Health Center includes both an ambulatory clinic and endoscopic procedure area.

Each day the clinic sees an average of 100 patients for conditions being treated by gastroenterologists, hepatologists, and surgeons. It includes 17 exam rooms and an on-site lab. The procedure unit handles an average of 50 patients per day. It includes eight procedure rooms, offering the latest in technology for colonoscopy/endoscopy, double balloon, PEG placement, pill endoscopy, upper motility, lower motility, fibroscan, EUS (endoscopic ultrasound) and ERCP(endoscopic retrograde cholangio pancreatography). The volume and variety of procedures makes it a fast-paced environment.

The Digestive Health Center is an accredited comprehensive center for bariatric surgery. The clinic care teams include doctors, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, nursing assistants, medical assistants, clinical technicians, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and physicians in training. Procedural sedation is used in most procedures, and some involve collaboration with anesthesiologists. The multidisciplinary approach creates a fun environment for professional growth and fulfillment.

This position provides managerial and clinical leadership for the James A. Clifton Digestive Health Center Clinic and Endoscopy Procedure Suite. This role ensures that all staff provide safe clinical care and have the education, methods, and resources to accomplish their performance objectives. The Nurse Manager will focus on planning, organizing, directing, evaluating, and improving healthcare operations, clinical education programs, and research programs of clinical and health service departments. They may periodically need to assume direct patient care responsibilities to support the staff and programs.

Key Areas of Responsibilities Include but arprogramse not limited to:

  • Human Resources Management:
    • Hire, develop and manage the performance of staff.
    • Responsible for talent management of staff and identify succession plan strategies.
    • Follow and apply leave management policies.
    • Knowledgeable of and implement human resources policies/procedures and provisions in the collective bargaining agreements.
    • Ability to apply organization's performance management system, practices, and tools to developing and improving individual, team, and organizational performance.
  • Staff Development:
    • Educate and mentor staff in the management of complex patient care issues.
    • Provide clinical education and coaching to develop staff competency and professionalism.
    • Participate in and support education of health care students.
  • Financial Management:
    • Assist in budget development; provide projections and recommendations.
    • Monitor and maintain clinical operating budget within specified targets.
    • Analyze variances and create action plans to take corrective action.
    • Understand financial implications of collective bargaining agreements.
    • Knowledge of, and ability to apply, policies and practices for planning and administering a budget.
  • Customer Relations, Communication, Collaboration:
    • Review patient satisfaction data and collaborate with clinical leadership to develop, implement, and evaluate plan(s) to enhance patient satisfaction.
    • Ability to meet or exceed customer service needs and expectations and provide excellent service in a direct or indirect manner.
    • Ability to effectively transmit and interpret information through appropriate communication with internal and external customers.
    • Ability to work with a variety of individuals and groups in a constructive and civil manner while appreciating the unique contribution of individuals from varied cultures, nationalities, genders, ages, etc.
  • Operations, Standards of Care, Regulatory Compliance, Quality and Patient Satisfaction:
    • Provide leadership to establish and/or maintain efficient and effective systems to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
    • Knowledge of and ability to manage effective and smooth operations in a clinical service or department by utilizing various management principles and techniques.
    • Identify trends and determine quality initiatives and priorities.
    • Understanding of the issues related to the decision-making process; ability to analyze situations fully and accurately and reach productive decisions.
    • Knowledge and understanding of legislation and regulatory bodies affecting healthcare and clinical research practices.
    • Ensure clinical area is survey ready.
  • Patient Care/Services Delivery:
    • Assess care coordination within multidisciplinary team to maximize patient satisfaction and continuity of care.
    • Identify needs, trends, and forecasts to provide quality patient care and ensure appropriate flex staffing.
    • Advocate for needs of clinic with healthcare leaders.
    • Facilitate multidisciplinary participation in clinical problem solving.
    • Utilize unit councils to identify opportunities for improvement and innovative models of care using a multidisciplinary team to impact patient outcomes.
    • Encourage staff to participate in evidence-based practice research initiatives and incorporate best practices into clinical operations.
    • Able to demonstrate ethical behavior in diverse situations while producing results.
    • Allocate resources to meet quality and productivity expectations.
    • Monitors patient volume and ongoing changes in patient diversity, acuity, and complexity.
  • Planning & Goal Management:
    • Collaborate in the development of action plans for the clinical area that meets health care strategic goals.
    • Monitor/evaluate goal implementation and provide progress reports to clinical and nursing leadership.
    • Ability to utilize existing resources and learning to achieve or exceed desired outcomes of current and future organizational goals/needs.

Schedule: Full time - Work hours are typically Monday - Friday between 8 am - 5 pm (1 hour meal break). Scheduled work hours will vary to support staffing needs and program operations before 8 AM or after 5 PM as needed.

Education or Equivalency Required
  • Master's Degree in Nursing or related field. If Master's Degree is in related field, Baccalaureate in Nursing is required.
  • If qualified applicant does not have Master's Degree in Nursing, the applicant will need to complete an advanced degree in nursing, health care administration, or business administration within five years of beginning this position.
  • Current license to practice nursing in Iowa or ability to obtain an Iowa license by date of hire is required.
Required Qualifications:
  • Considerable (3-5 years) experience in leadership/management roles to include prior experience working with regulatory bodies and survey readiness/negotiations is required.
  • Proficiency with computer software applications (such as Microsoft programs).
  • • Demonstrates time, management, organization of workload, delegation, attention to detail, and thoroughness.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work effectively with interdisciplinary teams by demonstrating excellent interpersonal and team leadership skills.
  • Demonstrates excellent written and verbal communication skills to serve as a liaison and to collaborate with physicians, staff, patients, and other consumers.
  • Established skills for leading change and implementation of evidence-based practice.
  • Professional job-related experience fostering or promoting a welcoming and respectful work/academic environment where people of all backgrounds and perspectives feel welcomed and appreciated; or demonstrated the ability to do so.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Considerable (3-5 year) experience working in digestive health clinical practice which includes endoscopy suite experience is highly desired.
  • Experience working in an academic medical center is highly desired.
  • Demonstrated skills in effective communication, collective bargaining, knowledge of UI and UIHC Policies, procedures, protocols, and regulations.
  • Expertise and knowledge for coaching and mentoring team members to reach their highest potential.
  • Membership/involvement in professional organizations.
  • Professional certification in relevant nursing or clinical specialty through a nationally recognized professional nursing certification body. If not currently certified, must seek certification in a role or specialty as soon as eligible to sit for exam.
