Position Summary

The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign School of Music invites applications for a full-time non-tenure-track Teaching Professor position in Musicology, broadly defined, at the Assistant, Associate, or Full professor level. We seek an imaginative, dynamic colleague who will sustain an active scholarly agenda while teaching a wide range of graduate and undergraduate courses. The teaching load for this position will include graduate seminars, mixed classes of graduates and upper-division undergraduates, and large undergraduate lectures. The position offers the opportunity to contribute to a forward-thinking Musicology program within a world-class research university. Salary and rank commensurate with experience.

Teaching Professors (Assistant, Associate, and Full) at Illinois are considered specialized faculty. Approximately 30% of faculty in the School of Music are specialized. New hires in these roles start with a one-year contract that becomes renewable after the first year, up to a maximum of five years at a time. Contract renewal is based on the quality and effectiveness of one's work, as determined by (e.g.) course evaluations and internal peer review. After three years, specialized faculty may receive subsequent multi-year contracts per the discretion of the hiring unit. Specialized faculty at UIUC are represented by a union, the Non-Tenure Faculty Coalition (NTFC) Local #6546, that negotiates salaries and benefits. Located on the Urbana-Champaign campus, the University of Illinois School of Music is a center for creativity and collaboration through performance, research, and education. Responsibilities

The successful candidate will teach the equivalent of a 4/4 load of graduate and undergraduate courses within the School of Music; work equivalent to teaching courses includes creating new courses, supervising graduate students, and serving on graduate student exam committees. Their courses will serve a diverse population of graduate and undergraduate students majoring in performance, music education, musicology, and composition; graduates in conducting; undergraduates in music technology and production; and non-music majors. They will also supervise student research, including undergraduate capstone projects, musicology M.M. theses, and D.M.A. research projects. The successful candidate will sustain an active scholarly agenda; and they will be committed to making an instructional impact and contributing to the School's broader mission through public engagement, service, or research.

Minimum Qualifications

• Ph.D. in ethnomusicology, musicology, or a closely related field conferred by August 15, 2025.

• Evidence of professional activity in research, public engagement, or service in ethnomusicology/musicology.

• Demonstrated experience teaching undergraduate courses in ethnomusicology/musicology-including classes for upper-division undergraduates, and large lectures-and preparedness to teach graduate seminars.

• Preparedness to mentor graduate D.M.A. and Musicology Master of Music projects and undergraduate student research.

Preferred Qualifications

• Potential for, or record of, scholarship or community-engaged activities.

• Scholarly expertise and/or teaching experience in one or more of the following areas:

o Culturally relevant pedagogy or related theories/frameworks

o Disabilities studies

o Ecomusicology and affiliated fields

o Gender and sexuality studies in music

o Global Black and African diasporic sonic practices

o Indigenous/First Nations sonic practices

o Ludomusicology

o SE Asian sonic practices

o Sound studies

o Other emergent areas and approaches.

• Experience advising student research in ethnomusicology/musicology or a closely related field.

Our Musicology program fosters interdisciplinary and globally engaged research and teaching. The program values approaches that integrate musicological scholarship with ethnographic methodologies, cultural and critical theories, performance, and an emphasis on diverse musical practices. Faculty specializations span a wide variety of topics; they mentor and advise graduate and undergraduate students, while contributing to the academic community through research, teaching, and service, and fostering connections across the university and beyond; many members sustain affiliations and collaborations with other departments, centers, and programs across the campus.

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Academic faculty position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is August 16, 2025. The previously determined salary range for these positions is $60,000 - $68,000 at the Teaching Assistant Professor level, $75,000 - $90,000 at the Teaching Associate Professor level, and $90,000-$100,000 at the Teaching Professor level. The final salary offered will be determined by an assessment of available market data, internal salary equity, candidate experience and qualifications, collective bargaining agreements, and budget constraints. Work authorization sponsorship is available for this position.
