About the Department

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology has 140 clinical providers, providing care at the main hospital in Hyde Park and seven off site locations. We have more than 68,000 outpatient visits, 28,000 ultrasound visits, 2,800 deliveries, and 3,300 surgeries per year. Teaching, research, and the highest quality clinical care are top priorities for the Department. The residency and fellowship programs are highly ranked and have a history of training leaders in healthcare. The Department also has a significant research enterprise, engaging in population health studies, as well as research conducted in wet laboratories on tumor biology, fibroid research, and hypertensive diseases in pregnancy. The department was ranked #16 on the 2022-2023 U.S. News & World Report.

Job Summary

The job uses best practices and knowledge of patients and exercises autonomous decision making in the assessment, diagnosis and initiation of delegated medical treatments. The scope of practice includes family support, discharge planning, staff education, consultation, and research. This role provides care to both our inpatient and outpatient population.

Perform duties as a PA, who is a skilled health care provider, qualified to evaluate, diagnosis, and treat patients under the scope of supervising and/or alternating supervising physicians. Services provided in the Maternal-Fetal Medicine section for patients include but are not limited to prenatal care to patients with high-risk pregnancies due to fetal or maternal conditions, medication management of medical conditions which complicate pregnancy (i.e. diabetes, hypertension) in both outpatient and inpatient settings, contraceptive counseling and postpartum care for these patients. Services are provided with available consultation from attending physicians and in collaboration with medical trainees. The supervising physician or the alternate physician maintains final responsibility for the care of the patient and the performance of the PA.

Responsibilities

  • Independently sees patients in Hyde Park and offsite clinics, administers, orders, and interprets diagnostic tests, such as ultrasounds, CT scans, and laboratory tests.
  • Examines patients to obtain information about their physical condition.
  • Instructs and counsels patients about prescribed therapeutic regimens, emotional problems of daily living, and health maintenance.
  • Administers or orders diagnostic tests, such as x-ray, electrocardiogram, ultrasounds, and laboratory tests.
  • Interprets diagnostic test results for deviations from normal.
  • Diagnoses and makes decisions about the management and treatment of patients.
  • Obtains, compiles, and records patient medical data, including health history, progress notes, and results of physical examination.
  • Performs therapeutic procedures, suturing and wound care, and infection management.
  • Prescribes therapy or medication.
  • Performs biopsies and contraceptive procedures.
  • Visits and observes patients on hospital rounds, updating charts, ordering therapy, and reporting back to physician.
  • Provides physicians with assistance during surgery or complicated medical procedures.
  • May order medical and laboratory supplies and equipment.
  • Designs patient education programs that include information required to make informed health care and treatment decisions.
  • Evaluates goals and outcomes taking into account the benefit-versus-burden, safety, quality, and cost-effectiveness for the patient, family and the organization.
  • Develops diagnostic strategies and therapeutic interventions needed to achieve the goals and outcomes of the patient's plan of care.
  • Has a deep understanding and response to adverse drug reactions, with special attention to vulnerable populations such as infants, children, pregnant and lactating women, or older adults. Develops and coordinates APP training and professional development.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:
Minimum requirements include a college or university degree from an accredited school/college.

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through a combination of education and a minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience in a related job discipline.

Certifications:

Current and/or eligible for State of Illinois licensure/registration required. Eligibility to be privileged and credentialed through the Medical Staff Office (MSO). - State of Illinois

Preferred Qualifications

Education:
  • Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant educational program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs.

Experience:
  • Two years' experience preferred in OB/GYN, surgical specialty, or primary care; MFM a plus.

Licenses and Certifications:
  • Current Physician Assistant (PA) license/registration in the State of Illinois or eligibility to receive by start date.
