Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:

The Department of Earth, Marine and Environmental Sciences (EMES) and the Institute of Marine Sciences at UNC-CH advances understanding of the earth and ocean processes that govern our planet, shape diverse ecosystems, sustain life, and drive environmental change. We promote exploration and discovery of the natural world by engaging students in research-based learning at all levels. Our graduates are equipped with the strong science foundation, critical thinking skills, and interdisciplinary perspectives required to tackle current and future environmental and resource challenges. We encourage engaged service that translates knowledge for the public good.

Position Summary:

We seek a postdoctoral researcher with expertise in environmental microbiology, environmental engineering and molecular biology, particularly as applicable to bioinformatics and built environment or marine science. This postdoc will work on quantification and assessment of molecular pathogens in. The position is for 12 months, with an additional extension of up to one year possible with the generation of additional funding. The successful candidate will carry out molecular analysis including digital PCR and sequencing-based analysis of surface, water, and aerosol samples, and work with collaborators to generate collaborative reports and presentations, write scientific papers; and presenting research at national and international meetings. If the successful applicant is interested, the position may also involve experience in co-mentorship of undergraduate and/or graduate students, as well as teaching opportunities. The position will be housed in the UNC Noble Lab, in collaboration with the NSF ERC PreMiEr (https://premier-microbiome.org/what-is-premier/), which encourages a collaborative and supportive research environment.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Must have Ph.D. in environmental sciences and engineering, environmental microbiology, or microbial ecology or a related discipline before start of position.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

Must have ability to program fluently in scientific programming language such as Python, R, Javascript, or other bioinformatics tools. Must have experience in analyzing the use of molecular methods including next generation sequencing and PCR for the analysis of complex samples.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

Experience working with large microbiology and microbial-based datasets, bioinformatics, statistical analysis, and or modeling.
