Job Summary

The person in this position must be in touch with multiple vendors of consumables, materials and equipment, and requires a professional judgment of balancing the cost and function of the supporting software, materials, equipment, and replacement parts.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Communicates with equipment vendors to keep the equipment and the processes it performs within the operational specs of equipment according to the equipment manuals and FAMES Lab SOPs.
  • Communicates continuously with IU facilities and MESH building management to keep the equipment operating in accordance with lab and building service facilities and infrastructure.
General Responsibilities
  • Oversees development of processes related to tuning specific applications in high-temperature and fiber-fabrication workflow. Plans sequence of workflow operations and specifies procedures for preparing material and equipment.
  • Designs and conducts tests, tools, and measurements throughout stages of project to calculate equipment specifications. Ensures standards of quality, cost, safety, reliability, timeliness, and performance for all equipment and processes.
  • Performs custom equipment modifications, automates workflows, engineers' processes for research projects, and verifies device functionality across projects such as the draw of individual and multiple semiconducting, metallic, and ceramic cores; sintering of 3D-printed silica; and tapering and capillary breakup setup for axial patterning of silica-clad fibers.
  • Collects and analyzes data to inform process development/refinement and equipment modification. Communicates results to staff for use in research and publications.
  • Orders parts and software, communicating with vendors as needed. Restocks lab supplies necessary for carrying out established workflows and processes and for operating equipment.
  • Maintains operability of equipment and trains staff and students on equipment use.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION

Required
  • Bachelor's degree in physics, chemistry, electrical engineering, material science, or closely related technical field
Preferred
  • Bachelor's OR Master's degree in a Technical Education Field such as Physics, Material Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent
WORK EXPERIENCE

Required
  • 2 years in process development and operation and maintenance of complex automated mechanical equipment
Preferred
  • 5 years of process development, operation, and maintenance of complex automated equipment
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATE

Preferred
  • Machinist, Electrician, Plumber, and/or Facilities Manager Certificate(s)

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Advertised Salary

$64,000 - $74,000 annually based on experience and internal equity.

Work Hours

Monday - Friday, 8am to 5pm (EST) with a 1-hour lunch break.

Occasional evening, weekend, and/or holiday hours may be required.
