Pay Range Information:

Chapman University is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this position. This range takes into account a variety of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. Salary offers are determined based on the final candidate's qualifications and experience, as well as internal equity and other internal factors. The anticipated pay range is not a promise of a particular wage.

Job Description Summary:

This position serves as an investigator for incidents of sexual misconduct, but also in the capacity as a generalist for student conduct and student support through the Dean of Students office.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the initial review for routine to complex complaints related to complaints of sexual misconduct and sexual harassment with student respondents
  • Conduct prompt, impartial and equitable investigations, including meeting with complainants, respondents, and witnesses. Acting as a neutral party, gather relevant information and ensures a prompt, fair, and neutral process for all parties. Create comprehensive investigation summaries
  • Make determinations of fact and applies relevant University policies and sanctions (as appropriate). This includes writing a comprehensive, clear report identifying the issues discussed during the hearing, analyzing University policy and sanctions (as appropriate).
  • Maintain accurate and through records and notes of any investigation and hearing processes.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of supportive measures, interim actions, and informal resolutions, as appropriate.
  • Assist in maintaining database and records related to complaints and investigations.
  • Provide information to students, employees, and others regarding the Student Conduct Code and university policies.
  • Create and provide trainings and presentations to university students, faculty, and staff student conduct policies and procedures.
  • Serve as an investigator and hearing officer for student conduct cases, including those possibly involving temporary or permanent separation from the University, as assigned.
  • Ensure student compliance with University sanctions.
  • Assist with management of University conduct system.
  • Assist in development and implementation of training for Residence Life and First Year Experience.
  • Assist with training various stakeholders on the policy and procedures of the sexual misconduct process.
  • Provide periodic, timely updates of the status of complaints received and investigations in process to the Title IX Coordinator.
  • Review and participate in update to University policies, procedures, and services including to maintain compliance with harassment and discrimination laws and regulations.
  • Develop and maintain relationships and clear lines of communications with campus partners including the Dean of Students office, Public Safety, Residence Life and First Year Experience, Human Resources, Athletics, and other departments as necessary to resolve concerns and complaints and ensure that the University's process, responses and policies are consistent with federal and state laws and requirements.
  • Provide assistance with assessment of the student conduct program and sexual misconduct support services.
  • Provide general Dean of Students office support to students of concern.
  • Meet with students petitioning for late withdrawal to support them in the preparation of their applications.
  • Serve on division and institutional committees as assigned.
  • Serve as a Campus Security Authority as defined by the Clery Act.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree or other advanced degreed strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of progressively responsible full-time experience in higher education or student conduct setting.
  • Working knowledge of Title IX, Title VII, FERPA, Clery Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Drug Free Schools and Campuses Act, the Violence Against Women Act, and California Senate Bill 493.
  • Proven ability to prioritize duties when faced with interruptions, distractions and a fluctuating workload.
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy, maintain neutrality and confidentiality when faced with indifference or hostility.
  • Experience with public presentations and public speaking to engage various stakeholders.
  • Committed to the principles of a fair, equitable process and respect of all individuals.
  • Excellent analytical and writing skills and the ability to create logical, through, and grammatically correct reports.
  • Demonstrated ability to make independent decisions on sensitive and complex issues.
Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience investigating sexual misconduct/Title IX, Title VII, hazing or other sensitive matters preferred.
