Position Summary and ResponsibilitiesThe Program Manager will assist the Director of the Environmental Cooperative with all aspects of developing and implementing “Exploring Science”, an environmental education program that includes in-school, after-school, and summer programming. This position would help with other outreach events and initiatives as needed. This is a two year, grant funded position with the possibility of renewal. The scheduled hours are 30 per week.
Responsibilities
- Lead field trips and programs on the Vassar Preserve and at local schools.
- Assist with curriculum development for the Exploring Science program.
- Communicate with teachers to schedule classroom visits and field trips.
- Facilitate partnerships with school district administrators and teachers.
- Mentor Vassar College student interns
a. Take a leadership role in coordinating Vassar student intern schedules and duties
b. Assist in training interns for Exploring Science programs
c. Observe and assess student interns as teachers in the classroom and on field trips
- Present programs and resources sponsored by the Environmental Cooperative and the Vassar
Preserve to the community through participation in special events.
QualificationsRequired
- Bachelor’s degree and two years of work experience, or Master’s degree in a related field.
Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Experience teaching K-12 children outdoors and/or in a classroom setting
- Excellent oral and written communication skills; must be comfortable speaking in front of
groups of people.
- Have a passion for the sciences and the outdoors and a desire to share this passion with others.
- Excellent organizational skills and the ability to coordinate scheduling and communication with teachers and school administrators.
- Must be able and willing to work outside in all kinds of weather.
- Able to work independently and must be detail-oriented.
- Valid driver’s license.
Preferred
- Coursework in the natural sciences, education, environmental science, or related field.
- Bilingual in Spanish.
- Familiarity with the natural history, including the identification of local plants and animals, of
the Eastern US.
- Experience working with/in schools in Dutchess County, NY.
