Project Microbiologist

This is an entry level position for the Food Safety Research Group. The primary focus of this position is on utilizing university training to execute laboratory procedures/research projects in the laboratory, including cause of spoilage investigations, basic challenge studies, and working with the different spoilage and pathogenic microorganisms. A basic understanding of the different food safety regulations will be acquired during tenure at this position. Qualified to design basic research studies, write proposals, protocols, and reports for studies under the oversight of a Research Microbiologist or higher position. Qualified to review and approve data generated by the laboratory. This position has a 50% focus on laboratory tasks and a 50% focus on consulting tasks.

Employee Responsibilities:


  • Coordinates the execution of research studies with the laboratory (Operations Group) to completion, including any pre-study tasks (protocol R&D, costing, scheduling, purchase of specific microorganisms), logistics for receiving or sending back client supplies/equipment and products, and client on-site visits.
  • Participates in consulting sessions along with a Research Microbiologist or higher level position to determine technical requirements and to suggest plans to accomplish these needs. A high degree of creativity and technical organization is required to support this task.
  • Communicates directly with internal and external clients about their projects, including providing data updates and interpretation for the projects, under the supervision of a Research Microbiologist or higher level position, in a timely and effective manner to execute Best in Class service.
  • Writes proposals, study protocols, and final reports for Food Safety Research studies.
  • Conducts scientific literature reviews and interprets the data obtained from the scientific literature to support study design or product/process assessments, as required for the Group or to support client projects.
  • Designs basic complexity research studies to support the scientific recommendations provided to clients, under the supervision of a Research Microbiologist or higher level position.
  • Reviews and approves data generated for Food Safety Research studies.
  • *Discusses technical problems or scope changes internally with Research Microbiologists and Senior Technical Manager, and suggests solutions and actions to resolve problems.
  • Performs preliminary review of study reports to assure completeness and accuracy prior to submission for final review.
  • Provides scientific mentoring activities (e.g. training on specific laboratory techniques or technical background related to a project) to the laboratory.
  • Ensure that projects are conducted to meet Group quality standards.
  • Maintain project, laboratory and experimental records.
  • Maintain a safe and clean laboratory environment.
  • Work as a team with the technical leaders and laboratory staff to execute Best in Class service.
  • Assists (leads would be for other positions) with commercial activities to support Group financial goals.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
The Ideal Candidate would possess:


  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Able to prepare and give oral scientific presentations.
  • Able to prepare written scientific publications.
  • Skilled in data interpretation and report writing.
  • Demonstrated ability for logical thinking, vision, and creativity necessary to function effectively with little structure or supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform complex method development and problem solving.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Minimum Qualifications:


  • M.S. in Food Microbiology or related field plus 0-2 years of industry experience
  • 15-20%, international and domestic travel
  • Authorization to work in the United States indefinitely without restriction or sponsorship

Position is full-time, Monday - Friday, 8 hours per day, with overtime hours as needed. Candidates currently living within a commutable distance of Livermore, California are encouraged to apply.
