Job Summary
The Laboratory Technician for the FLUdetect study will perform various essential laboratory tasks to understand the infection dynamics (mainly, influenza virus) in the naturally infected human populations.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Performing nasal swab screening assays to detect natural infection in longitudinal samples. (including carrying out the test, and entry of data to the database to keep a record of the results and track the longitudinal sample).
  • Ensuring proper storage, and maintaining sample integrity, which are used in the follow-up experiments.
  • For the samples collected, performing live virus quantification in cell culture (mainly, but not limited to, the plaque assay and other experiments).
  • Molecular biology assays (Mainly, but not limited, RNA isolation, RT-qPCR, and ddPCR-based quantification of viral genomes to understand the dynamics of viral shedding).
  • Keep detailed written reports of these experiments, and archive data obtained.
  • Undertake data entry, processing, and statistical analysis of the gathered data, and provide written summaries of these statistical analyses.
  • Collaborating and communicating with the team on technical issues that may arise during sampling and experiments.
Additional Physical Demands
Duties for this position will be performed in a laboratory setting. The handling of biological materials may present some risk of exposure to hazardous materials. Proper safety protocols must be maintained at all times.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Microbiology, Virology, Biology, or other related disciplines. Laboratory research experience including adherence to safety protocols and understanding of current research methodologies.

Preferred Qualifications

Familiarity with molecular biology techniques.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Able to communicate effectively in a team.
  • Willingness to adapt to evolving procedures and protocols in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to handle potentially infectious materials and adhere to safety protocols.
Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 12/4/2023. The budgeted salary range is $42,000 to $50,000 per year. Final salary offered is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity.

This position will be renewable annually during the start of the academic year subject to periodic reviews that include continued participation in theme-related activities, compliance with university policies, and upholding of IGB's commitment to providing an inclusive, diverse, and welcoming environment.
