Position Summary:

Under general supervision, staff that have been trained in the various units of The Johns Hopkins Children's Center use the knowledge of concepts related to Respiratory Care to evaluate and recommend appropriate treatment for patients with cardiopulmonary compromise in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Inpatient Pediatric General Care Units. The Pediatric Respiratory Care Practitioner-Clinical Specialist (RCP-CS) are trained to work in the PICU and Pediatric General Care Units (Pediatric core staff), the NICU (NICU core staff). Pediatric Respiratory Care Practitioner-Clinical Specialists are also eligible for training as ECMO Specialists once proficiency in all respiratory care modalities is demonstrated. RCP-CS will demonstrate competency in setting up, operating, delivering, and discontinuing medical gas therapy, humidity therapy, aerosol therapy, hyperinflation therapy, bronchial hygiene therapy, invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation, emergency care/resuscitation, and airway management to patients with cardiopulmonary complications. The RCP-CS builds relationships with other members of the healthcare team and participates in the realization of each patient's multidisciplinary plan of care. Other duties as assigned.

Education:

Minimum Associates Degree in Respiratory Care (or equivalent) required. Graduation from a Registered Respiratory Therapy Program approved by the Commission For The Accreditation Of Respiratory Care Education (CoARC). Bachelor's degree in Respiratory Care or other associated bachelor's degree preferred.

Work Experience:

Minimum of 2 years of critical care experience in pediatrics or neonatal respiratory care, and/or ECMO. Must be competent in the ability to analyze and interpret physician orders, perform therapy and communicate outcomes of treatment to the health care team members. Applies respiratory care modalities to pediatric and neonatal patients consistent with JHH practice along with hospital-approved techniques of infection control. Demonstrates organizational skills that allow the individual to map out and provide clinical care within their area of responsibility. Effective verbal communication and interpersonal skills to establish working relationships that foster optimal quality patient care. Ability to apply principles of evidence-based practice and service excellence in practice. In age-specific populations, must be familiar with particular patient populations to which they are assigned.

Licensure/Certification:
Registered Respiratory Therapist (R.R.T.) Required. Maryland State License Required. PALS and B.L.S.Required. NRP is required for the NICU. STABLE Is preferred or obtained within 1 year of hire.

Knowledge/Skills:

Must possess knowledge of cardiopulmonary pathophysiology and its relation to the practice of respiratory care.

Must demonstrate competency in the application of theoretical principles to the initiation, maintenance, and discontinuation of all respiratory care modalities and related equipment as gained in a COARC approved respiratory care program.

Requires the aptitude to be trained and the fundamental knowledge to apply all equipment and therapeutic modalities used in respiratory care and ECMO.
