Job Description

The Technician, Laboratory Senior Minerals performs a variety of testing and analysis activities under limited or no supervision of a Supervisor, Laboratory. Determines chemical and physical characteristics or composition of solid, liquid, or gaseous materials for such purposes as quality control, process control, or product development by performing the following duties. Performs non-routine testing complex assignments and is accountable for the analysis, decisions and recommendations of test work or programs. Acts as a Team Lead in the absence of the Supervisor, Laboratory or a Manager, Laboratory.

JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Performs laboratory testing activities according to written procedures, following the company's Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's).
  • Duties include: data collection, sample reception, sample preparation, sample reduction, sample dilutions, setting up analytical batches and analysis, batch quality control, approving and releasing results to the client, disposal of samples and filing of lab results/data.
  • Prepares a representative subsample from client sample that meets specific requirements using defined methods (Dry, Crush, Pulverize, Pressure Filter, Mix, Riffle Split, etc).
  • Receives, sorts, logs client samples into the data base, and prepares sample labels.
  • Archives, returns, or disposes of client samples as per established procedure.
  • Prepares monthly composites.
  • Weighs and tests samples on relevant equipment.
  • Accurately completes and maintain all laboratory reports.
  • Performs daily, weekly, and monthly Quality Assurance/Quality Control checks on equipment.
  • Demonstrates good and safe work habits and enforces a clean working environment.
  • Performs general upkeep and housekeeping of the laboratory.
  • Ensures compliance with all required local and federal safety processes and procedures.
  • Ensures all personal protective equipment (PPE) relevant for tasks is worn as required.
  • May also have preparation or field responsibilities, as required by business needs.
  • Helps to develop and validate new methods of analysis with the Lab Manager/Assistant Manager in cases where clients require specific methods to be used or where more efficient methods of analysis have been identified.
  • Serves as a Team Leader when Laboratory Supervisor and Laboratory Manager are not present.
  • Provides technical training, advice and support to the Laboratory Technicians as required.
  • Assists staff to carry out and complete tasks according to established work procedures.
  • Trains, motivates and monitors staff during shift.
  • May be responsible for planning the assignments and work flow of the Technicians on their crews.
  • Works in partnership with other Technicians to solve client problems to ensure quality and customer satisfaction standards are met.
  • Ensures that each person has sufficient information, resources and materials to do their job safely.
  • Accountable for routine and non-routine equipment maintenance.
  • Daily ensures all safety equipment is in place and being worn as instructed.
  • Adheres to internal standards, policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Associate degree or High School (GED) and equivalent years of experience Required
  • 5+ years working in Industrial or Laboratory or Field Services setting with experience following strict safety standards Required
  • Water Laboratory only: Where required by state law, requires Bachelor's degree in Science and 3+ years of Laboratory experience. Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Science or in related discipline in combination with experience outlined above AND Preferred
  • 1+ year supervisory experience Preferred LICENSES / CERTIFICATIONS
  • A valid and current Driver's license may be required if the role requires driving a company vehicle.
  • • May be required to obtain a TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Card). • May be required to obtain 24-hour surface Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) certificate, training is available through SGS.

  • This job operates in a laboratory environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, printers, and phones.
  • This role routinely uses sample prep equipment that may include Jaw Crusher, Bowl & Disc Pulverizing Mills, Pressure Filters, Riffle Splitters, Compressed Air.
  • This role routinely uses laboratory equipment/instruments that may include Bottle-top Dispensers, Eppendorf Pipettes, Balances, Muffle Furnace, Sulfur Analyzer, Compressed gases, and ICP-OES as needed.
