The Special Collections and Engagement Librarian at The Latin American Library (LAL) combines subject expertise, knowledge of archival standards, and familiarity with digital initiatives to process and provide access to collections in Latin American, Caribbean and Diasporic Studies.  This position works closely and shares duties with a team of LAL librarians.  In collaboration with the Curator of Special Collections, they participate in all phases of processing the LAL's wide range of primary sources in many formats, including accessioning, arranging, describing, cataloging, and preservation. With LAL librarians, they create online exhibits and publications, develop the LAL's online presence, engage in presentations, instructional sessions, and contributes to other outreach activities. This position serves on library committees, collaborates and coordinates activities with other Tulane Libraries units, and actively participates in national and international professional and scholarly associations.  This position reports to the Director of the LAL. Qualifications:
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:·         ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent and a degree in any field of Latin American studies; OR advanced degree in any field of Latin American studies and familiarity with the operations of an academic library;·         Command of English and Spanish, spoken and written;·         Advanced knowledge of the history, politics, economics, literatures and cultures of Latin America and the Caribbean;  REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES TYPICALLY NEEDED TO PERFORM THIS JOB SUCCESSFULLY: Strong interest in and/or experience with archival methods and processes for physical materials;·         Strong interest in and/or experience working creatively with digital and online tools and media to engage users with collections;·         Evidence of ability for ongoing professional development and contribution;·         Excellent interpersonal and communications skills;·         Demonstrated ability to work creatively and collaboratively in a team environment;·         Demonstrated ability to work equitably and effectively with a diverse and/or international public;·         Enthusiasm for an innovative environment; ability to keep abreast of research trends in Latin American Studies and relevant library technologies;·         Works collaboratively with relevant departments in the Tulane University Libraries and on campus to ensure compliance and cross-departmental collaboration;·         Incorporates inclusive and equitable policies and processes to ensure diversity and accessibility in all aspects of work;·         Actively seeks out and participates in relevant professional organizations and professional development opportunities;·         Ability to function fully and competently at technology competency Levels I and II outlined in the HTML Core Technology Competencies for Employees (See https://library.tulane.edu/sites/default/files/core_technology_competencies.pdf)

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:   Competence in Portuguese or willingness to acquire competency.·         Training in archival science or prior experience working in an archive.·         Experience working with digital projects and tools. This section is for identified jobs only and may be deleted if not mandatory.SPECIAL REQUIRED ABILITY FOR INCUMBENTS WHO HAVE CONTACT OR EXPOSURE TO ANIMALS OR ANIMAL TISSUES:Ability to complete and pass successfully the required occupational health screening referenced in the University's Animal Handler Health Surveillance Program on an annual basis.  REQUIRED BACKGROUND CHECK, PHYSICAL, AND DRUG SCREENING FOR INCUMBENTS WHO HAVE CONTACT OR EXPOSURE TO ANIMALS OR ANIMAL TISSUES:Selected candidates must complete and pass a background check and an occupational health screening as a condition of employment.  For identified jobs, a drug screening will also be required. The background investigation required occupational health screening, and any required drug screening will be conducted after a conditional employment offer has been extended.
