The Clinical Systems Support Analyst in the Biomedical Technology Services department is responsible for front line clinical IT systems support including but not limited to the electronic perioperative record (Epic OpTime and Anesthesia applications), vendor systems deployed and utilized throughout the perioperative environment, and internally developed departmental IT systems. The analyst is a subject matter expert of these systems and manages, triages, troubleshoots and escalates issues as they arise. The Analyst is also responsible for training departmental clinicians on these applications. The Analyst plays an active role in maintaining the specialized computer hardware used in the anesthesia and perioperative setting, including hardware for biomedical device integration. The Analyst works individually and in a team setting with IT Hardware Technicians, Clinical Engineers, Software Developers and System Administrators for support tasks and projects. Additional projects, tasks, testing, upgrades, interface enhancements and training activities are within scope of the position.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The Analyst participates in the front line support, on-going maintenance and training of the MGH clinical computer systems, applications, and interfaces used in perioperative and procedural sedation cases at the MGH main campus as well as off-site locations served by MGH anesthesia clinicians.
  • Within 3 years of holding the position the Analyst is expected to obtain Epic Proficency in Anesthesia or OpTime.
  • Provide ongoing support of the applications, interfaces, and hardware, including: on-site and telephone support, on-call coverage, system maintenance, interface and system enhancements as well as hardware and software upgrades and replacements.
  • Use an understanding of systems, software, and hardware to troubleshoot and assess system issues.
  • Triage multiple support calls from clinicians and solve problems in a timely and professional manner.
  • Communicate project status and prepare project administrative materials, e.g., work/task list, status reports, agendas, memos, minutes, and other project files.
  • Perform QA analysis and testing according to system testing procedures as required
  • Develop project and system documentation
  • Create training materials and provide training for clinicians and other end-users.
  • Monitor and assess the automated billing process.
  • Work as a liaison between Clinical departments, Biomedical Engineering, Information Systems and the Anesthesia Billing Office and Vendors.
  • Function both as an individual contributor and team leader/member within the Department of Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Medicine and the Perioperative Services Department.
  • May independently be responsible for specific technology areas or specific locations.
  • Incumbent will work under the direction of the Administrative Manager, Clinical Engineer, or Systems Administrator depending on the tasks assigned and type of support needed as an individual contributor and as part of a team.
  • 40 hrs per week (day shift) with occasional on call rotation and night and weekend support for go-live implementations, emergency maintenance, planned upgrades and OR access.


Qualifications
SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
  • Ability to carry out principle duties and responsibilities, measured by direct observation and feedback from clinicians, and other end users of the applications.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelors degree requirement.
  • Bachelors degree in electronic/ biomedical engineering or computer science or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with the operating room environment is preferred but not required.
  • Basic knowledge of anesthesia workflow is preferred but not required.
  • Proficiency in Personal Computer setup and maintenance.
  • Basic Knowledge of .NET, VB, XML, and SQL preferred.
  • Familiarity with medical device and system interfaces.
  • Familiarity with software testing and validation processes
  • Local travel may be required to support remote campuses.
  • Must be flexible, versatile and adaptable in day-to-day activities conducted in a multi-site environment.
  • Must possess basic analytical and problem solving abilities.
  • Must be well organized.
  • Demonstrates ability to prioritize tasks with an appreciation for critical paths and deadlines.
  • Demonstrates comfort working in a group setting.
  • Demonstrates good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Able to create basic functional specifications for clinical systems.
  • Must possess basic teaching skills.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate with staff, management and others across all levels and departments of the hospital and its affiliates. Must be able to get along with others and resolve conflict appropriately.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Work will occur in standard office conditions as well as in hospital operating rooms and other patient care areas. Operating rooms will create exposure to human bodily fluids, sharp equipment such as scalpels, cleaning agents and other substances and materials found in such a setting. Walking and standing for periods of time are required. Local travel may be necessary. Some night and off shift work required. May lift and carry equipment weighing up to an average of 25 pounds.
