Veterinary Nurse/Veterinary Technician, Surgery - College of Veterinary MedicineThe College of Veterinary Medicine invites applicants to apply for the position of Veterinary Nurse/Veterinary Technician, located within the Small Animal Clinical Sciences’ Surgery service. The primary purpose of this position is to provide entry-level patient care in the Surgery service within the Small Animal hospital. Position facilitates nursing care, patient receiving, treatments, and diagnostics, including ensuring requests have been submitted prior to the end of the work day. Provides clinical instruction to 4th year veterinary students and veterinary technician interns. Prepares patients for surgery and remains available to circulate in the operating room. Prepares and assists with surgical procedures and provides follow-up care for patients. Provides a consistent service team member for clients to communicate with, and handles all public inquiry calls. Coordinates with other services for patient care/diagnostics and coordinates the daily surgery schedule.Depending on experience and qualifications of successful candidate, individual will be hired in as a Veterinary Nurse 1, Veterinary Nurse 2, or Senior Veterinary Nurse 1.
Qualifications
Typical Responsibilities:Provides entry-level nursing care in surgery by preparing patients for surgery, continuously monitoring and evaluating hospitalized surgical patients, and circulating in the operating room. Provides alternatives for malfunctioning or missing equipment. Instructs and guides choice of suture. Performs and instructs bandage placement and care for the specific wound. Administers prescribed medications and has knowledge of drug interactions and proper dosing. Facilitates and performs proper wound drain care and management, including evacuation and removal the drain and aseptic management. Operates the c-arm equipment with knowledge of radiation safety. Obtains and submits laboratory samples. Schedules appointments and surgeries. Guides and prepares for procedures. Performs surgical instrument cleaning and pack preparation, and has knowledge of the maintenance and care of specialized equipment. Performs blood and urine collection and intravenous access. Instructs veterinary students and veterinary technician interns in the application of clinical skills.Facilitates appointments. Performs client follow-up calls. Answers public inquiries regarding cost and procedure. Coordinates with other services for patient care/ diagnostics. Coordinates the daily surgery schedule. Instructs personnel on proper infectious control policies. Attends patient rounds with clinicians and service technicians to communicate the needs and status of the patient to other services. Monitors the service emails and facsimiles received, and relays these communications to the veterinarian.Enters charges and approves patient bills. Creates cost estimates for clients. Becomes familiar with procedures for repair and recovery for equipment. Oversees ward stocking and including items supplied for wound management. Attends staff, service and departmental meetings. Participates in online training required by the department and university. Interviews candidates for job positions and surgical residencies. Serves on university departmental and college committees.
