The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences (NRES) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (https://nres.illinois.edu) is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Visiting Telemetry Research Coordinator (NRES).

Major Duties and Responsibilities

• Deployment, implementation and monitoring of hydrophone array needed to monitor fish passage at Melvin Price Locks and Dam on the Mississippi River.

• Deployment of telemetry tags and accelerometer tags into fish in the vicinity of Melvin Price Locks and Dam on the Mississippi River.

• Analyze data from telemetry and accelerometry studies quantifying the interaction of tagged fishes in the vicinity of Melvin Price Locks and Dam on the Mississippi River.

• Sharing outcomes and outputs of research projects with relevant stakeholders in technical and non-technical forms (i.e., conference presentations, peer-reviewed manuscripts, technical reports, popular press articles).

• Coordinating activities of graduate students and undergrads.

• Establishing and maintaining positive work relationships with state, federal and industry partners.

• Maintaining/repairing data collection gear.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in fisheries, wildlife biology or a related field.

• Experience with aspects of standard fisheries techniques including fish handling, fish husbandry and collection of fisheries data.

• Experience with data handling and data analyses using current statistical techniques and program R.

• Familiarity with boats.

• Valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with fish telemetry including surgeries, deployment/downloading of autonomous telemetry stations.

• Analysis of telemetry data.

• Operation of boats and boat trailers and transporting of boats and trailers on large highways/interstate highways.

• Experience preparing data sets for dissemination to peer-reviewed outlets.

• Experience coordinating research teams and organizing field research activities.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of fisheries ecology and conservation, as well as aquatic ecology, along with aspects of aquatic conservation.

• Knowledge of aspects of fish holding/handling and fisheries techniques, along with the collection of fisheries data.

• Good judgement, interpersonal skills, and problem solving/critical thinking, along with a commitment to safety, and meticulous data recording.

• Organized and comfortable working both independently and as part of a team.

• Ability to maintain good working relationships with project partners.

• Coordinate field research activities.

• Analysis of telemetry data.

• Operation of boats and boat trailers and transporting of boats and trailers on large highways/interstate highways.

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Visiting Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is November 1. The wage for this position is $48,000-$56,000.
