The University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital is seeking a 60% (24 hours per week) Weekend Option PICU Nurse Practitioner and/or a PICU Nurse Practitioner (Requisition 24002700). This position may be eligible for a transition and relocation allowance. Please apply to the requisition you would like to be considered for, or both. The ARNP will provide overall medical care and provide medical management for patients, exercising autonomy in medical decision-making and services provided, in UI Stead Family Children's Hospital's In-Patient Intensive Care Unit(s). They will function independently and/or as a member of an interdisciplinary team to plan, deliver, and evaluate health care for the inpatient ICU population. There is extensive focus on caring for hospitalized patients to manage care and length of stay, improve resource utilization and decrease costs to patients and the institution while providing personalized care. This position is located in Iowa City, IA. This is a specified term position.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Assesses the patient's health status by means of history taking, physical examination, laboratory studies, and any additional means that are determined to be appropriate, including performance of the following procedures (but not limited to) i. e. PICC lines, arterial lines, central venous catheters, lumbar punctures, chest tube placement, and intubations.
  • Plans and communicates treatment programs relating to the health aspects of the patient's needs.
  • Recognizes, discriminates, and manages acute illness, chronic conditions, and disabilities.
  • Determines and facilitates referral and consultation needs in a timely manner.
  • Completes medicine documentation and billing procedures according to institutional and departmental guidelines.
  • Integrates health information into the diagnoses and treatment plan for each patient and may assist the patient and family in the implementation of the plan in the community.
  • Provides an ongoing health education program for patients and their families, utilizing all available media.
  • Initiates therapeutic measures using independent judgment according to recognized clinical guidelines.
  • Performs other projects as assigned.
  • Ability to synthesize scientific, behavioral, and humanistic principles for application to clinical practice at the advanced nurse practitioner level.
  • Understands nursing theory, pathophysiology, and pharmacokinetics with ability to perform patient and family assessment by means of an appropriately comprehensive history and physical examination, develop differential diagnosis based on history, physical and interpretation of appropriately ordered tests and evaluations, develop a plan of care and implement treatment including referrals and prescriptions, and evaluate patient responses to health, illness and treatment.
  • Ability to identify patient/family/community care and education needs. Develop, implement and evaluate the effectiveness of the care plan, coordinating care as indicated with referral and consultation resources, community support agencies, schools, and local primary care providers.
  • Knowledge of research activities, research findings, and quality improvement principles related to patient outcomes with ability to participate in development and implementation of such activities.
  • Understands the Nurse Practice Act, including ARNP components.
  • Ability to utilize therapeutic communication skills to provide counseling to patients and families.
  • Expertise in the common diagnosis and healthcare needs of patients they see.
  • Ability to perform technical skill defined by collaborative practice agreement according to Iowa Board of Nursing, and UIHC standards.
  • Ability to function as an independent practitioner within guidelines of the collaborative practice agreement, Iowa Board of Nursing, and UIHC standards.

Education Requirements:
  • A Master's Degree is required, in Nursing preferred
  • If Master's Degree is in a related field, a Baccalaureate degree in Nursing is required
  • Current certification as a nurse practitioner (Acute Care NP) and licensure as ARNP in state of Iowa is required.
Required Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated experience of two or more years in the care of critical care pediatric patients or experience that demonstrates knowledge of the care of all patients admitted to a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Selected candidates will be expected to successfully obtain a Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner- Acute Care (CPNP-AC) certification within 3 years of hire.
Desired Requirements:
  • Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.
  • Demonstrated experience exercising autonomy in medical decision-making and services provided is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated experience managing length of stay, improve resource utilization and decrease costs to patients and the institution while providing personalized care is highly desirable.
